Check to confirm that the employee’s name and Social Security number match what is on their Social Security card. You can use the free Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) which allows registered employers to quickly verify whether a person’s name and Social Security number (SSN) match Social Security’s records.

  • If the information does not match the employee’s SSN card, update your records with the information shown on their SSN card, unless they have legally changed their name and that is why it does not match. If the employee has legally changed their name but has not let us know, they can go to our Social Security Number and Card page to find out how to update their record.
  • If the information does match the employee’s SSN card, ask them to contact their local Social Security office and provide their information for verification. The local office will follow procedures to resolve the issue, if possible. Once resolved, the employee should inform you of any changes.

Go to our online office locator or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778)
