We use an additional step to verify your identity when you sign in to your personal my Social Security account so we can protect access to your account. We use your specific cell phone number to send a one-time security code to sign in to your my Social Security account. If your cell phone number does not change, and your new cell phone has text capability, you do not need to take any action.
If you no longer have access to your cell phone number, you may request a reset code online. We will mail a reset code letter to your verified address. When you receive the letter in 5 to 10 business days, you enter the reset code online to change the cell phone number associated with your account.
If you do not want to enter your cell phone number, you may choose to register your email address so we can send your security code by email. If you choose not to receive a security code by text message or email, you will not be able to access your personal my Social Security account.
