When we notify you of an overpayment, you have the right to appeal the overpayment decision or request we waive (not collect) the overpayment.  We may stop collection of the overpayment if:

  • You are not at fault in creating the overpayment; and
  • Paying it back would cause you financial hardship or be unfair for some other reason.

If you agree that you’ve been paid too much, you have options for repaying it.

If you are receiving Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, we will withhold from your monthly benefit.

If you are no longer receiving Social Security benefits or SSI payments, you have the option of securely repaying your overpayment online. Your overpayment notice will include a unique Remittance ID and the link where you can make a payment.
